The Woodland Project

The old school was built in 1881 and moved to its present site in 1976.  It serves the village of Penllergaer and the new development at Tir Coed.  Another development on the Lliw Valley side called Parc Penllergaer also falls into the school’s catchment area.

Penllergaer Primary School is an open plan school on a split site.  The three main blocks comprise classrooms, practical areas, library, TV rooms, specialist teaching facilities for pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), kitchen, offices and staffroom.

The nursery is situated in a modern building with separate play area.  The school can also boast a large playing field with separate rugby and football pitches, a nature area and hard standing areas within its extensive grounds.  We also have a superb timber climbing frame area.

We believe that the role of parents in their children’s education is vital and therefore encourage parental involvement at every level.  The school’s PTA is an active, hardworking body which is very supportive of the school.

The school’s Governing Body is also active and keenly interested in the school’s development and growth.

The school prides itself on high standards within a broad curriculum.  We have recently achieved Quality Mark, Investors in People, Health Promoting status and the Schools’ Curriculum Award.

• Sensitive and creative delivery of the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects.

• Ongoing development in ICT to allow children to develop a wide range of interactive computer skills.

• Sympathy and concern for the needs of the individual child and learning situations tailored to suit all pupils.

• Mathematics taught discretely and through topics, using carefully selected schemes supplemented by teachers for individual requirements.  A variety of approaches and techniques are used to ensure firm grounding in basic skills.

• The development of language by encouraging an appreciation of a variety of styles from poetry to factual writing.  Great emphasis is placed on the basic skills  of spelling, punctuation, grammar, comprehension and handwriting.  Reading is a vital skill and pupils will be encouraged to read at home as well as in school.

• Scientific experiences to stimulate and challenge children.  We aim to nurture curiosity, while developing and teaching skills and concepts.

• The full range of foundation subjects which can be presented to children in topic or project form, encouraging them to research and question while learning skills and absorbing knowledge.

• Design and technology, which encourages planning, designing, appraising and problem solving, so preparing children to face challenges in the future.

• Music tuition to a high standard.  Children are given the opportunity to learn to play a range of instruments.  The school has an orchestra and large choir which regularly play in the community.

• Several after-school sports clubs and teams, including football, netball, rugby, hockey, cricket, rounders, dance and athletics.  Run by teachers and also some parents (please get in touch with the school if you can help!), these are in addition to the range of physical and creative activities provided through the PE curriculum. This choice of activities is unbeaten in any other Swansea school and we hope that the children take full advantage of the range that is offered.

• A positive school ethos based on sound Christian principles and all of the positive benefits that such an approach surely entails.  Local church organisations are regularly invited to the school to lead assemblies.

• Regular formal meetings with parents to discuss the progress of their children.  Informal meetings with teachers and / or headteacher are also easily arranged.

“WRAP AROUND” SERVICES

Our optional “wrap around” service starts with breakfast club from 8.00 a.m. (free of charge) and ends with a well structured after school club from 3.20 p.m. – 5.20 p.m. which is reasonably priced.

The school operates an “open door” policy and parents, new and old, are welcome to visit at any time.
